An award-winning winery with its own Denomination of Origin is the beating heart of the extraordinary Abadía Retuerta estate in Castilla y León. But Abadía Retuerta’s soul rests in its 12th century Romanesque abbey, a painstakingly restored Spanish cultural heritage site, which now houses an intimate, luxurious hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant.

The estate has a remarkable history, dating back to 1146 when the Santa María de Retuerta monastery was founded on the site in Spain’s central plateau. The wines produced by the monks had already won fame by the 17th century.

But over time, the estate switched to agricultural production and its enormous viticultural potential lay dormant until the late 1980s, when the decision was taken to restore the now privately owned 700-hectare property while incorporating the most advanced technnology. The man behind its revival was renowned French consultant Pascal Delbeck, who not only designed one of Spain’s first fully gravitational wineries, but worked with oenologist and head winemaker Ángel Anocíbar to replant the vines and instigate meticulous soil analysis of the 54 distinct plots.

Winemaking is just one jewel, however, in the crown of Abadía Retuerta. The lovingly restored Romanesque abbey abbey is now home to an intimate 30-room hotel (the first in Spain to provide full butler service). Diners at the Michelin star restaurant, Refectorio, can savour high quality ingredients and products sourced from small-scale local producers while gazing at a 17th century fresco of The Last Supper. The Santuario Wellness & Spa, housed in the former stables area, is now a 1000-sqm plus temple to wellbeing using water extracted from its own well. Throughout the estate, a collection of Renaissance, Baroque and modern art is displayed in both modern and 15th-century settings, paying homage to Abadía Retuerta’s rich natural and cultural heritage. It is little wonder that it has been declared an official Site of Cultural Interest and was granted a Protected Designation of Origin recognising the estate's unique soils, microclimate and more than eight centuries of winemaking tradition.

About Abadia Retuerta

This extraordinary 700-hectare estate is located less than two hours’ drive from Madrid, in the heart of the Duero Valley near Sardón de Duero. The winery, five-star hotel and Michelin star restaurant are based in a meticulously restored former monastery which dates to the 12th century. Drawing on more than 800 years of winemaking tradition, Abadía Retuerta cultivates 200 hectares of vineyards using organic principles. The Duero River is responsible for the huge variety of soils that are found across the 54 individually tended vineyard plots (Pagos), mainly differentiated by soil composition and grape variety. The revival of the estate in the early 1990s was led by Pascal Delbeck (Château Ausone, Belair) who designed one of Spain’s first fully gravity-fed wineries, built in 1996. That same year the current winemaker and director of vineyard and winery, Ángel Anocíbar, joined the team, who are dedicated to making outstanding wines imbued with the personality and uniqueness of the terroir.

Guests can experience the estate’s special character first-hand in the three-Michelin key hotel, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, which has 27 carefully restored rooms and three suites as well as spaces devoted to gastronomy, wellbeing and art. Its flagship restaurant, Refectorio, in the abbey’s original dining hall, has been awarded a Michelin Star, a Michelin Green Star and Two Respol Suns for its creative, seasonal cuisine, starring organic ingredients from the estate. The 1,000 sqm Santuario Wellness & Spa and collection of over 170 artworks from the Renaissance to the 20th century round out the one-of-a-kind luxury experiences offered by this leading Green Globe certified resort.
