Inventation to the Erste Lage Tour de Vin

by Dorli Muhr

The traditional dates in May had to be cancelled. But now it’s even better: right on time for the launch of the new Erste Lage wines, members of the growers’ association Österreichische Traditionsweingüter will be opening their doors and inviting visitors to a collaborative event on 5–6 September 2020, one that will reach from Traisental to Carnuntum.

All the top wines in a single weekend

The finest wines always grow in extraordinary vineyards – that is an experience that all winegrowers have in common. Out of this fact of life, the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter have developed a system of classification: at present, eighty-nine vineyards have been defined as Erste Lage sites – ‘first growth’ or ‘premier cru’. Wines from these vineyards must be matured for a longer period of time before they can be released to the market. For white wines, the release date is the beginning of September in the year following the harvest. For the reds, one has to wait an additional twelve months. And so: the first weekend in September is the perfect time for wine lovers to have an opportunity to taste the Erste Lage wines – and many others – at all of the ÖTW member estates in Traisental, Kremstal, Kamptal, Wagram, Wien/Vienna & Carnuntum. To join the Erste Lage Tour de Vin you will need a Tour de Vin button, which is available for 25€ at all member estates. This badge provides for admission and tasting on 5–6 September from 10.00–18.00 at any of the sixty-eight member estates.

About Österreichische Traditionsweingüter

The winegrowers association was founded in 1991 as a consortium between the Danube regions of Kamptal and Kremstal. 17 estates took part in a pilot project whose stated goal was the classification of Austrian vineyards; over time, this grew to the current level of 77 members. The ÖTW sees the ÖTW.Klassifikation as a tool for providing wine aficionados with a clearer system for orientation and appreciation of appellations and sites.
