The story of 20 vintages of Cuvée G from Gesellmann winery.

For generations, Gesellmann winery in Austria’s Deutschkreutz has stood for wines with character, depth and authenticity. But it is Albert and Silvia Gesellmann who, with sensitivity and dedication, have carried the tradition forward and led the winery into a new era. Their masterpiece is the Cuvée G – a harmonious symbiosis of Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent that ranks among Austria’s most important wines. It embodies everything the Gesellmann estate stands for: indigenous grape varieties, old vines and a deep understanding of the terroir of Mittelburgenland.

A tribute to tradition

The origins of Cuvée G date back to the 1990s, when Engelbert and Albert Gesellmann decided to create a wine that would capture the essence of Mittelburgenland. Father and son deliberately chose native varieties and selected vines up to 90 years old, producing low yields but maximum concentration and depth. The first vintage, 1997, marked the beginning of a legend.

Now, more than two decades later, Cuvée G, which is only produced in selected years, is celebrating its 20th vintage. Over the years, this wine has become a symbol of elegance, complexity and Burgenland identity. These 20 vintages stand as impressive testimony to the consistency and evolution of this exceptional wine.

The Blaufränkisch for Cuvée G is sourced from the finest vineyards – including the renowned Hochberg. The St. Laurent portion, now at around five percent, comes from some of the oldest vines on the estate. Although the varietal proportions have remained largely unchanged, each vintage reflects the characteristics of its growing season. The spectrum ranges from very warm, concentrated vintages to cooler years that yield wines of finesse. Albert Gesellmann sums up what makes the wine so special:

“Cuvée G is our tribute to tradition. With every sip, you can experience the vintage in just a few drops of wine.”

The philosophy behind Cuvée G

The old vines produce small yields but offer the highest degree of balance and depth. Each parcel is carefully selected, the grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with the utmost precision. Cuvée G matures in the finest barrels: 40 months in new 225-litre barriques, followed by an additional three months of aging in large tanks holding up to 4,000 litres. This meticulous and extended aging process gives the wine its exceptional structure, spice, and remarkable longevity.

The estate follows a clear philosophy: no international grape varieties, no short-lived trends – but rather a wine with true identity, defined by depth, elegance, and expressive character. This makes it not only the flagship of Gesellmann winery, but also a milestone in Burgenland’s wine culture.

A wine with history and future

Every vintage of Cuvée G tells its own unique story – such as 1997, which marked the beginning, or 1999, when Cuvée G made a powerful comeback after the difficult vintage of 1998.

Yet the story of Cuvée G is far from over. With each new vintage, the wine continues to evolve – always remaining true to its roots yet continually offering a new interpretation of the Mittelburgenland terroir. Albert and Silvia Gesellmann remain committed to uncompromising quality, selecting only the best grapes and continuously refining their style – always with the goal of creating a wine that not only captivates today, but continues to impress for decades to come.

Cuvée G is more than a wine. It is an expression of origin, craftsmanship and dedication – and a true jewel of Austria’s Burgenland.
