Austria’s premier winery group Österreichische Traditionsweingüter has been leading the way when it comes to provenance and quality for 35 years. This commitment has given rise to a shared mission for the future of the Austrian wine industry. The fact that 91 of Austria’s leading wineries have joined forces demonstrates that constructive collaboration for the common good can even help reshape the law.

Much has been achieved

Since ten dedicated winegrowers from the Kamptal and Kremstal regions founded the group in 1991, Österreichische Traditionsweingüter have been driven by a spirit of solidarity, mutual respect and shared values, with a clear commitment to provenance, history, social responsibility, craftsmanship and sustainability. This collaborative aspect is more important than ever – particularly when it comes to a relatively small wine producing nation like Austria holding its own on the international market.

The association now has 91 members across eight wine regions – in addition to Kamptal and Kremstal, these are Traisental (2001), Wagram (2001), Carnuntum (2018), Wien/Vienna (2018), Thermenregion (2022) and Weinviertel (2024). Its members cultivate around 3,600 hectares of vineyards in total, which corresponds to 8 percent of Austria’s total area under vine.

The aim of the founders of Österreichische Traditionsweingüter was to make Austria’s finest vineyards visible, comprehensible and, ultimately, officially recognised. The latter was achieved in 2023 with the decision to enshrine the vineyard classification system developed by the ÖTW over three decades in law.  This two-tier system, comprising Erste Lage (Premier Cru) and Grosse Lage (Grand Cru), is part of the Austrian wine law currently being drafted, which ÖTW Chairman Michael Moosbrugger is helping shape as a consulting member of the National Wine Committee.

The great potential of the new law lies not only in the more democratic structure of the governing bodies and a joint discussion on quality and origin, but above all in its openness to new wine styles such as natural wines. This is breaking down the once entrenched divisions between traditional and alternative wine styles. And there are opportunities to meet the needs of consumers and position Austria as a wine producing nation that promotes its diversity and proudly showcases it to the world.

It is not just a new era for Austrian wine law; within the ÖTW, too, the next generation is taking the reins:

“It has been a wonderful journey.” After 20 years as chairman of Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW), Michael Moosbrugger announced his resignation at a press conference held at the VieVinum wine fair in Vienna’s Hofburg Palace. He will remain in the role until the end of 2026, before “passing the baton to the next generation”. Moosbrugger’s successor will be announced at the Single Vineyard Summit 2026 (7–10 September, Grafenegg castle, Lower Austria).

The multi-day Single Vineyard Summit was held for the first time in 2013 and has since offered an international audience of wine professionals an exclusive annual preview of the new vintage of Austria’s finest single vineyard wines, before they are released on the market. The Single Vineyard Summit not only marks one of the milestones in Moosbrugger’s time as chairman; today, the silent tasting format has become a fixture for the industry. This year, for the first time, all the wines available for tasting at the Summit are certified organic, biodynamic or Sustainable Austria.

Since its foundation, Österreichische Traditionsweingüter member wineries have been ambassadors for the finest Austrian wines of origin. Going forward, their focus will be even more firmly on “giving meaning to the classification, explaining it, protecting it and communicating it”, explains ÖTW Managing Director Michael Tischler-Zimmermann.

The modern, visual design of the new website, with its story telling approach, is just as much a part of this strategy as the further development of tasting formats and events. As a result, the successful Tour de Vin no longer takes place on a single date in spring, but has expanded to five events spread throughout the year, providing a greater opportunity for consumers to experience the ÖTW’s winemakers and their outstanding wines.

About Österreichische Traditionsweingüter

The winegrowers association was founded in 1991 as a consortium between the Danube regions of Kamptal and Kremstal. 17 estates took part in a pilot project whose stated goal was the classification of Austrian vineyards. Over time, this grew to the current level of 91 members. The ÖTW sees the ÖTW.classification as a tool to provide wine aficionados with a clearer system for orientation and appreciation of appellations and sites.
