Spain’s ultimate expression of origin

by Catherine Walbridge
Glass of red wine in the vineyards of Abadía Retuerta

Abadía Retuerta offers a unique tapestry of history and geography. This Spanish estate faithfully reflects its extraordinary eight centuries of heritage and place in two special wines produced from its own Designation of Origin in the Duero Valley.

Tempranillo is the soloist and the lead actor in the Pago Negralada 2019 and Selección Especial 2021 wines. Abadía Retuerta’s flagship grape adapts beautifully to the award-winning estate’s diverse soils, expressing the individual character of the separately cultivated vineyard plots.

Top Tempranillo

Historical documents suggest Tempranillo has been grown at the former monastery in Castilla y León since the 14th century, around the beginning of the Little Ice Age. That’s when the monks switched to producing red rather than white wines, according to head winemaker Ángel Anocibar, who has helped lead the revival of the Abadía Retuerta winery since 1996.

Pago Negralada is made from 100% Tempranillo vines rooted in deep gravel and sandy topsoil in the Negralada single vineyard close to the Duero River, giving the wine firm yet beautifully refined tannins. Matured in French oak barrels, each vintage is only released on the market when it is deemed to have reached the perfect stage of maturity.

“Pago Negralada embodies the finest expression of our Tempranillo from the 2019 vintage – a low-yielding year that produced wines of exceptional depth and structure.”

Blend of the best

While Pago Negralada is the ultimate expression of the pureness of Tempranillo, Selección Especial is a blend of Abadía Retuerta’s very best plots (pagos). While Tempranillo always forms the foundation of the first wine made by this renowned estate, it is complemented by varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

All the vineyard plots are carefully tasted and the best are then chosen for the Selección Especial blend to showcase the vintage, terroir and personality of Abadía Retuerta. The objective, says Ángel Anocibar, is to balance the characteristics of each vintage while maintaining the wine’s smooth and well-balanced signature style.

“Each variety brings something unique to Selección Especial: some contribute structure, others aromatic depth or persistence. The key is finding the perfect balance of percentages to achieve the finest expression of each vintage,” the Bordeaux-trained enologist says.

Deep-rooted tradition

The defining natural feature of the Abadía Retuerta estate is, and has been throughout its remarkable history, the Duero River. Carving its way through the landscape, it is responsible for the huge diversity of soils – from limestone and clayey sediments to sandy gravel – across the 54 organically farmed vineyard plots.

The exceptional quality of the wines is further enhanced by the estate’s location at the narrowest part of the Duero Valley. The closeness of the slopes bordering the valley means temperatures can drop significantly, meaning that Abadía Retuerta has some of the lowest temperatures in the province of Valladolid.

These climatic and geographical traits imbue the grapes and wines with irreplicable authentic character. This singular quality was formally recognised in 2022, when Abadía Retuerta was granted its own Protected Designation of Origin by the European Union.

Enjoy this extraordinary history in every sip. From the artfully blended Selección Especial to the purity of the single varietal Pago Negralada, Abadía Retuerta wines are steeped in heritage yet infused with a 21st century spirit and commitment to excellence.

Pago Negralada 2019

Denomination: Abadía Retuerta Protected Designation of Origin

This classic 100% Tempranillo is made from a vineyard close to the Duero River, with pebbly, alluvial soils. From a cooler vintage, this wine spent 17 months in French oak barrels. Superb potential for ageing.

Tasting note: A fragrant and complex nose, with hints of red and black fruits, and notes of spice, laurel and black tea. Refreshing on the palate and bold in structure, with smooth tannins and a long finish.

Selección Especial 2021

Denomination: Abadía Retuerta Protected Designation of Origin

This blend of 62% Tempranillo, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot represents a selection of the best wines from the 2021 vintage carefully blended and then aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels. A wine of reference.

Tasting note: A fruity bouquet, hints of toasted barrel and a bright freshness. On the palate, it is smooth and well-balanced with wonderful tannin integration and acidity.

About Abadia Retuerta

This extraordinary 700-hectare estate is located less than two hours’ drive from Madrid, in the heart of the Duero Valley near Sardón de Duero. The winery, five-star hotel and Michelin star restaurant are based in a meticulously restored former monastery which dates to the 12th century. Drawing on more than 800 years of winemaking tradition, Abadía Retuerta cultivates 200 hectares of vineyards using organic principles. The Duero River is responsible for the huge variety of soils that are found across the 54 individually tended vineyard plots (Pagos), mainly differentiated by soil composition and grape variety. The revival of the estate in the early 1990s was led by Pascal Delbeck (Château Ausone, Belair) who designed one of Spain’s first fully gravity-fed wineries, built in 1996. That same year the current winemaker and director of vineyard and winery, Ángel Anocíbar, joined the team, who are dedicated to making outstanding wines imbued with the personality and uniqueness of the terroir.

Guests can experience the estate’s special character first-hand in the three-Michelin key hotel, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, which has 27 carefully restored rooms and three suites as well as spaces devoted to gastronomy, wellbeing and art. Its flagship restaurant, Refectorio, in the abbey’s original dining hall, has been awarded a Michelin Star, a Michelin Green Star and Two Respol Suns for its creative, seasonal cuisine, starring organic ingredients from the estate. The 1,000 sqm Santuario Wellness & Spa and collection of over 170 artworks from the Renaissance to the 20th century round out the one-of-a-kind luxury experiences offered by this leading Green Globe certified resort.
