Places to be Wine

Young at heart in the Douro

by Catherine Walbridge

The Douro Boys have always known how to throw a party and their 20th anniversary is no exception. The group of like-minded friends who put Portugal’s Douro region on the map with their table wines and, naturally of course, their renowned ports, want to highlight their maturity with their typical tongue-in-cheek approach.

The luxury of time

As they juggled their hectic schedules, the five quintas – Vallado, Crasto, Niepoort, Van Zellers & Co and Meão – decided the one thing they, and their wines, would like more of was time. The luxury of time to be precise. And so, on 19 & 20 April 2023, time will stand still in the Douro Valley so trade guests can join the Douro Boys as they commemorate entering their third decade together.

Anniversary blends

A special tasting of matured red, white and port wines will demonstrate how the quintas have evolved since the passionate friends banded together back in 2003 to showcase their region to the world. That will be followed by the exclusive launch of two Douro Boys 20-year Anniversary Blends: a Cuvée red 2021 Magnum and a Very Old Tawny Porto. These limited editions will be available to buy at En Primeur prices at the event.

Douro Valley

20 years young

For those who still have the energy after a celebration dinner and haven’t had quite enough of the Douro Boys (and we agree they can be hard to resist even after 20 years...) you can pay them a personal visit at their quintas in the UNESCO World Heritage recognised valley to say “Olá” the next day.

About Douro Boys

Do great minds think alike? Absolutely—especially when passionate and talented winegrowers are involved. Since 2003, five wine producers from the Douro Valley have been working together on one common goal: supplementing their famous port wines with top-quality reds and whites, to show the world the incredible potential of this special valley.
