Weingut Doktor Wunderer offers a view into our future. One that is beautiful, inspiring, and sustainable. Located in one of Austria’s coolest regions—the northern Weinviertel, bordering on its west side directly on the wild Waldviertel—climate change is a useful tool here, allowing the production of wines borne by the freshness and bracing minerality for which Austria is famous. Dr. Gerald Wunderer, a physician by trade, has turned a family dream into reality here, with roughly ten hectares of vineyards now cultivated as part of a challenging and sustainable wine project.

“We didn’t take long to ponder when one of the well-established local estates came up for sale. We took over the old vines and cool cellar and got to work.”

Enjoying the freshness

While this cool landscape was once only used for early-ripening grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau, today Sauvignon Blanc and Grüner Veltliner can achieve a lovely aromatic ripeness on the primordial rock and loess soils, without becoming weighty or lush.

Winegrower Bernd Klammer has created an aromatic blend that belies its serious nuance and complexity through a nimble expression, thus setting a new standard for what truly qualifies as "quaffable."

No less fascinating is the single vineyard Grüner Veltliner, which with equal parts freshness and depth reveals a beautifully confident composure.

Aesthetics are perhaps one of the hallmarks of Weingut Doktor Wunderer. The label on his bottles bears the same elegant and fresh style as the wines within, playing on the family’s medical background with an unmistakable wink: the sense of gourmet joy and desire as well as life-affirming instincts and the center of erotic pleasure are all cataloged on the depicted torso—highlighting the perpetual interplay between the cultivated delights of wine and a harmonious sensuality in humankind. Who better to present this essential interaction than a generalist?

Regarded from this holistic framework, the team at Weingut Doktor Wunderer perpetually strives for wines that pair beautifully with food, another interaction that serves a greater and more balanced whole. This is also why the wines of Doktor Wunderer are primarily found at restaurants. To promote ideal balance in the wines, the estate also plans on allowing the wines to mature longer.

It's worth mentioning that the estate cultivates based on organic principles. The estate has also launched a project to construct its own winery built on sustainable practices.
