How to attend the Single Vineyard Summit 2024

by Catherine Walbridge
Single Vineyard Summit Tasting Schloss Grafenegg

Austria’s most prestigious wine tasting will return to historic Grafenegg castle in September 2024 – better than ever! The Single Vineyard Summit is held under the auspices of the 90-strong winery group, Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (Traditional Wine Estates of Austria). From 9-13 September 2024, wine professionals have the opportunity to taste the very best site-specific Austrian wines less than an hour’s drive from Vienna.

Once-a-year opportunity

Dozens of renowned producers from Austria’s key wine regions will gather in the picturesque Grafenegg estate to personally present their wines – before they reach the market. The breadth and depth of the single vineyard wines are renowned internationally but only once a year is there the opportunity to discover their singular characteristics in one place.

Personalised tastings

Exceptional wines, a special location and a unique programme tailored to professionals: this is the Single Vineyard Summit's recipe for success. The summit is geared towards the needs of professionals, be they sommeliers, wine journalists, retailers or importers.

There are two tasting slots each day, starting at 9 am and 2 pm. After registering, participants can decide for themselves which wines they would like to taste and in which order by noting the desired sample numbers. The wines are then usually served by the winemakers themselves. To avoid distractions, the format is a so-called ‘silent tasting’, where access is only permitted at the beginning of the pre-booked time slots and with allocated seating. Detailed information about the event and how to take part can be found in the FAQs below:

How much does it cost to attend?

Participation in the tastings is free of charge, plus a small lunch is served every day and a free shuttle is offered:

How will I and my business/employer benefit from attending the summit?

There are numerous benefits to attending the Single Vineyard Summit. It offers the opportunity of tasting the latest single vineyard vintages before they are released on the market. In addition, producers from all of Austria’s key wine regions are represented at the summit: Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wagram, Wien (Vienna), Carnuntum and Thermenregion. The summit also features the guest regions of Eisenberg and Leithaberg, as well as the STK wines from Styria and Vinea Wachau, and thus is a unique opportunity to taste Austria’s most renowned single vineyard wines in one place. This is also an event designed specifically around the needs of professionals rather than consumers, including access to the vintners themselves, many of whom serve their own wines.

I don’t speak German – will this be a problem or limit my participation?

Absolutely not! In 2023, more than 450 guests from more than 15 countries attended the summit. Most vintners are fluent in English, and a few other languages besides.

How do the tastings work at the summit?

There are two tasting slots each day – one starting at 9 am and the other at 2 pm. They are held in the former Riding Hall at Grafenegg castle. After registering and receiving confirmation, participants can then reserve their tasting slots in advance to ensure a place is available. This is largely done on a first-come, first-served basis so registering early will ensure you can attend when you want.

How many tasting slots can I book?

Depending on availability, each participant can book as many slots as they like during the week. However, the slots must be booked online in advance and are reserved only after the participant has received a confirmation email.

Who decides what and how many single vineyard wines I can taste?

You do. After you have signed up to attend the Single Vineyard Summit but before the event starts, you will be sent a spreadsheet list with information about all the wines that are available for tasting. This will allow you plenty of time to consider the flights and the order you would like to taste in. Once you arrive at your pre-booked tasting slot at Grafenegg, you can request six wines per flight, they will be delivered and served to you at your place. This personalised service is one of the (many) great features of the summit.

What is the ‘silent tasting’ format?

To allow participants to taste the wines in a calm environment that promotes concentration, the tastings are held in a so-called ‘silent format’. To help minimise disturbances to the other attendees, admission to each tasting slot will only be granted at the beginning of each slot, i.e. at either 9 am or 2 pm. During the day, we insist on silence in the tasting room.

About the Austrian Single Vineyard Summit

Five wine producer organisations come together for this event: Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW), covering the Danube regions of Kamptal, Kremstal, Thermenregion, Traisental, Wagram, Vienna, Carnuntum and Weinviertel, who are renowned for being pioneers in the classification of Erste Lage wines in Austria. They are joined by winegrowers from Eisenberg and Leithaberg as well as the Styrian Terroir and Classic Wine Estates (STK). 2022 marked the inaugural appearance of Vinea Wachau (Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus), an association of Wachau winegrowers founded in 1983. The ÖTW Single Vineyard Summit therefore offers tastings from all of the key wine regions and sites in Austria, under one roof at Grafenegg castle.
