VAUX breaks new ground with l'Artiste Brut and Rosé

by Dorli Muhr
VAUX l'Artiste

With two new sparkling wines bearing the name l’Artiste, VAUX is impressively demonstrating where its future path lies: at the top of the quality league in the world's best markets.

“These are the best prerequisites for playing in the top league internationally,” says CEO Christoph Graf, who is convinced of the potential of German sparkling wine. And of the potential of the VAUX sparkling wine estate in particular: “We have 150 years of experience in traditional bottle fermentation, combine French and German sparkling wine expertise and can rely on the cool fruit from the vineyards on the Rhine – even amid global warming. We also have a vision and the operational structure to position ourselves internationally.” A clear statement about the future.

Two distinct personalities

This epoch will see VAUX launch two sparkling wines in the super premium segment:

l’Artiste Brut

A sophisticated cuvée dominated by Riesling, but with a very French flavour and maturity. With flavours of fennel and apricot, yeasty and at the same time firm on the palate. A sparkling wine recommended as an accompaniment to food and one that declares itself as a central European, bridging Germany and France.

l’Artiste Rosé

The aroma alone is fascinating, with notes of wild strawberries and raspberries, followed by soft cedar wood and biscuit nuances. Its untamed nature is skilfully combined with the utmost delicacy. Seductive yet distanced, dense on the palate but floating with a special lightness. A sparkling wine that combines nature and culture in the most beautiful way.

Creative and bold for the future

It is not just the vinification and style of the two sparkling wines that are completely new at VAUX; their presentation is also clearly aimed at a new era.

By deliberately dispensing with a capsule, VAUX emphasises its environmentally conscious attitude. The strong colours, which meet like brushstrokes to form an 'X' on the label, point to the complexity and the self-confident, strong personality of the sparkling wine. At the same time, the X can also be interpreted as a crossroads in the company's history:

“Vaux was founded in Berlin in 1868, then later moved to Metz in what is now northeastern France and has been based in Rheingau since 1921. We have lived through many decades of political turmoil and the redrawing of geographical borders. The power of transformation is one of our strengths. Now we are also ready to face the new climatic challenges with vision and entrepreneurial resilience,” says Christoph Graf.

Bright future for positive people

What the sparkling wines and their strong presence also radiate is a positive attitude and confidence. “We observe the younger generations very closely. What we see are responsible people who treat the planet and each other very respectfully. We want to be there for these consumers with our wines and celebrate every beautiful moment of community and cohesion,” says Christoph Graf. Vaux commissioned the English agency Amphora Design led by Neil Tully MW to create the graphic design for the l’Artiste labels.

Origin redefined

The grapes for the two new sparkling wines in the l’Artiste line grow in Rheingau, but the vinification and ageing of the wines are clearly French in character. “We try to combine the best of two worlds – and ideally create a new, shared world. Ultimately, we see ourselves as central Europeans. We want to express this in the new sparkling wines,” says Christoph Graf.  The stylistic opening up towards cuvées is intended to support this positioning and also provide flexibility to withstand further climatic fluctuations.
