The Braunstein Brothers

by Astrid Rauch

Max and Felix Braunstein, the twin sons of Austrian biodynamic wine wonder Birgit Braunstein, make wine together. But differently, in a way they have consciously chosen. This is their own wine line, and it has their name: Braunstein Brothers.

They are young and wild, but definitely still serious.

Besides wine, the two have another passion: boxing. This requires quick reactions as well as stamina. Boxing also requires deft handwork and footwork – just like work in the vineyard or tamping in vats. Boxing requires fairness. Winemaking requires respect and confidence.

Nature sets the pace

Max and Felix learned almost everything they know about wine from their mother. Birgit Braunstein is a well-known name in the Austrian wine scene. Above all, she has been a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture for 20 years. Preserving nature, the delicate balance between plants, animals and human activity, concern for healthy soils and a stable ecosystem – all this has always been at the centre of Birgit Braunstein's work. That is why the twins can only imagine one kind of viticulture: biodynamic, natural and honest.

The foundation

Purbach lies at the foot of the Leithaberg mountains and on the shores of Lake Neusiedl. Here the vines grow on shell limestone, slate and crystalline quartz and benefit from an unusual microclimate. Above all, the soils are wonderfully healthy. Some of the vines are now the responsibility of the Braunstein Brothers. They work them according to their own ideas.

From roots to wings

The twins absorbed an understanding of nature at an early age. Viticulture has been practised in the Leithaberg region for more than 2,000 years. The Celts brought wine here. This is where the roots lie, and the two are building on this tradition. But now they are giving it wings.

The Braunstein Brothers have seen a lot of the world and learned a lot along the way. For example, that they can best realise their vision here, in this corner of Austria where it all started. But also that passion and having fun at work are the most beautiful and important things when it comes to making really good wine.

The wine

The two bottled the first two wines from the 2020 vintage. One white, one red. In both cases, they let nature take its course: spontaneous fermentation on the stems, longer maceration, maturation in amphorae, in wood, in steel tanks. Bottled without sulphur and unfiltered. The result? Primal, yet harmonious, lots of aroma, lots of character – and simply great to drink.

About Birgit Braunstein

Harmony is the word that best encapsulates Birgit Braunstein's philosophy. For over twenty years now, the grandest visionary of biodynamics in Austria can be found in Purbach am Neusiedlersee. Her estate is like a natural preserve in miniature, with buzzing bees, old growth trees and, of course, a stork nest. Much of her attention and gentlest care goes to her vines, planted along the Leitha mountains, where slate, shell limestone, and crystal quartz call the tune. Nature rewards her efforts with expressive wines, from lively Welschriesling to mineral/saline Chardonnays to refined Blaufränkisch.
