Baur au Lac's enchanting terrace: Summer wines & vibes in Zurich

The terrace of Baur au Lac is truly an oasis in the middle of Zurich, offering the relaxed, elegant flair of the Côte d'Azur in Switzerland's largest city. Here you can unwind and let your gaze wander over the hotel's colourful park, the lightning-blue Lake Zurich and white mountain peaks. And now summer wines are served that have been personally selected by the hotel's head sommelier, Marc Almert, for a relaxed get-together.

Easy drinking with style

A small wine list offering a large selection and high standards for easy enjoyment? It sounds paradoxical, and yet top sommelier Marc Almert proves it is possible with his curation of an excellent wine list for the terrace season at this grand Zurich hotel.

Seventeen still and sparkling wines are available on the menu by the glass – just inviting you to try one or two. Among them is a white wine from the legendary Swiss Grand Cru vineyard Dézaley, four Champagnes that could not be more different and a mature Bordeaux. The category of wines by the bottle continues with eight sparkling wines of impressive depth from France, four perfectly selected summer Rosés, sixteen white wines that journey across Europe and thirteen red wines, which this year show the sommelier’s clear focus on Spain. However, all this variety certainly doesn’t neglect wines from Switzerland – quite the contrary!

Larger parties will even find a selection of magnums in the eclectic wine list.

About Marc Almert

Marc’s career started in 2008 at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst in Cologne. He dreamed of becoming a hotel director. Yet a wise supervisor nudged Marc toward his first professional encounter with high-end wines—and soon thereafter his original career plans were put aside in favor of studies as a sommelier. Stations at Restaurant Ente at the Nassauer Hof and Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg followed, before Marc accepted a post as sommelier at the renowned Baur au Lac in Zurich in January 2017.

During Marc's years as a wandering apprentice, his insatiable curiosity drove him to invest as much spare time and energy as possible in sommelier training and competitions. In 2019, at just 27 years of age, this led to his crowning as “ASI Best Sommelier of the World.” Marc Almert has since taken on the position of Chef Sommelier at Baur au Lac and in early 2022 was invited to join the Baur au Lac Vins management team.
