“Really great stuff!“

by Bettina Bäck

Accompanied by these words of Germany’s elite VDP testing commission, the Riesling Sekt Kupfergrube Extra Brut 2016 from Gut Hermannsberg has entered the new and highly demanding league of the VDP.Sekt.Prestige. All available bottles of this exceptional sparkling wine went under the hammer at the VDP auction on the Nahe in September. Fortunately, Gut Hermannsberg has more great sparkling wine up its sleeve!

Not the chorus but a star performer

Sekt production has a long tradition on the cool Nahe. Nevertheless, sparkling wine is often a product that runs alongside other styles. Karsten Peter has been responsible for winemaking at Gut Hermannsberg since 2009 and right from the beginning, he was absolutely convinced of the Upper Nahe's potential for sparkling wine. The singular climate promotes freshness in the grapes, a concise acid structure, as well as slow and finesse-rich grape ripening – ideal conditions for great Sekt. Not to mention the incomparable minerality and elegance of Gut Hermannsberg's Grosses Gewächs sites.

Several years of sounding out followed. Then, as now, one immutable premise applies to every wine, including sparkling: the measure of all things is the character of origin. The winery's philosophy of terroir and maturity is consistently applied to all wine styles. At Gut Hermannsberg, sparkling wine is one of the main players, not a chorus member.

Sparkling celebration

Riesling Sekt Brut

Light and refreshing, but also elegant and mineral. An attractive balance of apple and citrus aromas with a subtle creaminess from maturation. Long-lasting drinking enjoyment with fruity freshness and lively acidity.

Food pairing: This Riesling Brut is a great accompaniment to fish dishes, as well as solo. Its lightness and freshness will appeal to anyone who likes this grape variety or light-footed Champagnes.

Vinification: Traditional Method with 36 months on lees before disgorgement with 7,5 g/l dosage.

The Riesling Sekt Brut is available for € 18.90 in the Gut Hermannsberg online shop.

Good to know: There are many who claim that you can't make a great sparkling wine from Riesling because the grape variety is too demanding. Riesling sparkling wines with long contact on the lees are indeed a challenge, as the typical petrol aroma of mature Riesling has no place here. Instead, freshness and elegance are important. This calls for much experience, an uncompromising focus on quality and a certain intuition on the part of the winemaker. All of this can be confidently attributed to Karsten Peter.

Blanc de Blancs Sekt Brut

The Blanc de Blancs from Gut Hermannsberg is a cuvée of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. With its pear, citrus and white flower aromas, the Blanc de Blancs Brut is fresh and creamy at the same time. The acidity and fine perlage play around the palate but are far from dominant and convey a smooth mouthfeel.

Food pairing: Blanc de Blancs Brut is a wonderful accompaniment to light summer salads, as well as a charming aperitif at a variety of parties.

Vinification: Traditional Method with 24 months on lees before disgorgement with 7,5 g/l dosage.

The Blanc de Blancs Sekt Brut is available for € 18.90 in the online shop of Gut Hermannsberg.

Good to know: When Dr. Christine Dinse and Jens Reidel took over Gut Hermannsberg in 2009, 10% of their GG sites were planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, with 90% Riesling vines. What at first appeared to be a disruptive factor turned out to be a stroke of luck! These vines, which are up to 30 years old, now provide the grapes for this wonderfully complex Blanc de Blancs Sekt Brut.
